Shortly after release, lawyers for The Pokémon Company began searching for the Sword and Shield leakers. We already knew that select Pokémon from previous generations would not return to Sword and Shield, but these leaks further fueled the fire of the "Dexit" outrage and backlash on social media. A list of Sword and Shield leaks detailed the Galar region Pokédex, Gigantamax forms, Galarian forms, and more. Then, the firestorm started in early November 2019, just before the games were set to come out. Months before release, a leak surfaced that ended up containing many true elements of the final games, including Team Yell, the rival's names, regional evolutions, and more. The most well-known example is 2019's Pokémon Sword and Shield, which suffered from a handful of leaks leading up to release, followed by a lengthy legal pursuit. Hackers said that leak was sourced from a Nintendo breach in 2018. In 2020, following Pokémon Sword and Shield’s release date, the game leaked again - specifically, a beta version of the game. The leaked images - which created an incomplete picture of the highly-anticipated game - were cited by these angry fans as further “proof” of The Pokémon Company’s perceived “lies” about the game. Leading up to the game’s release date, players had been angry with the company over Pokémon Sword and Shield’s lack of a national Pokédex. Video from the game, too, was posted to the internet.Ī new hashtag, #GameFreakLied, began trending in America in response to these leaked images and video.
POKEMON SWORD AND SHIELD POKEDEX LEK SERIES
Before and after these images were available online, a Portuguese website published a series of leaks that has since gotten the site blacklisted by Nintendo. The Pokémon Company said in that complaint that it “reacted swiftly” to the leaks, including issuing takedown requests across the internet. The photos revealed features that weren’t seen before, like the Gigantamax forms of certain Pokémon. The second defendant then shared those photos on Discord, from which they spread to a “worldwide audience,” The Pokémon Company said in the original complaint. Throughout the lawsuit, The Pokémon Company discovered that one of the two defendants took the photos while employed by the company that was hired to print the strategy guide. When The Pokémon Company first filed the lawsuit, it only had screenshots of the guides posted into a Discord chat.
The defendants are required to pay The Pokémon Company $150,000 each in damages and attorneys’ fees.
